The city of Maitland is in the Lower Hunter Valley approximately 166 kilometres by road North of Sydney and 35 km North-West of Newcastle.
On the banks of the beautiful Hunter River, Maitland is one of the oldest heritage centres in Australia. The area boasts the beautiful Hunter Valley wine region which has many restored colonial buildings. You can take the train from Sydney to Maitland, where you’ll find old fashioned country hospitality. The shopping areas include a mix of boutiques, cafes, restaurants and small bars. The monthly Maitland Markets has wonderful fresh local produce, gourmet food and home-baked treats.
You can explore Maitland’s history on the East Maitland Walk where you will see colonial philanthropist Caroline Chisholm’s cottage along with Maitland Gaol. The Gaol opened in 1848 and closed 150 years later. Maitland Regional Gallery has superb works by Australian artists, including Margaret Olley, Brett Whiteley, Fiona Hall and John Olsen. The Australian Museum of Clothing and Textiles and the National Trust-listed Grossman House are also near by. The city of Maitland’s many restored and heritage protected buildings date from as far back as the 1820’s and serve as monuments to the pioneering days, when white settlers endeavoured to make their mark on the Hunter Valley’s beautiful natural landscapes.
Maitland is great base for Australia’s oldest wine region including Pokolbin, Lovedale, Rothbury and Broke. A short drive away is historic Morpeth, a colonial river port. We have been servicing the Maitland area for over 40 years-so we know Maitland.
